Filipinos for Life denounces Mayor Duterte’s disrespectful comment against Pope Francis during his speech on Monday at the Century Park hotel.
We believe that the Mayor has greatly erred by cursing the good pope, who is not only loved by millions of Filipinos, but is also a head of state of Vatican City. We also decry his wanton behavior, in reference to his admission of his adulterous ways. We value sanctity of life, family, and marriage, above all – institutions that form the very foundation of every sound society. We are most disappointed that he chose not to uphold his marriage vows, which would have been the most vivid expression of his manhood, unlike the persona he projects where women are mere expendable persons to satisfy his sexual needs.
A person aspiring to become the nation’s leader should always be respectful of himself, his office, and of other people. If he can curse Pope Francis who did not deserve it in the least, how can we trust him to respect the fundamental rights of other innocent people? If he has no respect for the indissolubility of marriage, what other institutions crucial to the moral well-being of the people is he willing to tamper with?
We are aware that there are spokespersons who have issued an apology in behalf of Mr. Duterte and his blatant disrespect against the pope. What we ask is for himself to apologize to 80 million Filipino Catholics for his extreme disrespect against the pope and the Catholic faith. We also ask that he apologize to the women he had relations with, breaking his marital vows.
We also ask his supporters to discern well whether Mr. Duterte is indeed fit to be their choice as the next president of the country. This is a time for serious introspection and prayer; and we must listen to our informed conscience which acts as God’s voice in our hearts. We must also consider all the consequences of our actions, the positive as well as the negative effects of our decisions, in the short term and the long term, and what these decisions say about us.
Filipinos for Life believes that the recent events regarding Duterte raise serious doubts about his readiness for the highest office in the land. This nation deserves a morally upright and competent leader, one who will revere his position as a sacred duty to serve God and the people of the Philippines.
