On Mayor Duterte’s cursing of Pope Francis: Official Statement of Filipinos for Life

Filipinos for Life denounces Mayor Duterte’s disrespectful comment against Pope Francis during his speech on Monday at the Century Park hotel.

We believe that the Mayor has greatly erred by cursing the good pope, who is not only loved by millions of Filipinos, but is also a head of state of Vatican City. We also decry his wanton behavior, in reference to his admission of his adulterous ways. We value sanctity of life, family, and marriage, above all – institutions that form the very foundation of every sound society. We are most disappointed that he chose not to uphold his marriage vows, which would have been the most vivid expression of his manhood, unlike the persona he projects where women are mere expendable persons to satisfy his sexual needs.

A person aspiring to become the nation’s leader should always be respectful of himself, his office, and of other people. If he can curse Pope Francis who did not deserve it in the least, how can we trust him to respect the fundamental rights of other innocent people? If he has no respect for the indissolubility of marriage, what other institutions crucial to the moral well-being of the people is he willing to tamper with?

We are aware that there are spokespersons who have issued an apology in behalf of Mr. Duterte and his blatant disrespect against the pope. What we ask is for himself to apologize to 80 million Filipino Catholics for his extreme disrespect against the pope and the Catholic faith. We also ask that he apologize to the women he had relations with, breaking his marital vows.

We also ask his supporters to discern well whether Mr. Duterte is indeed fit to be their choice as the next president of the country. This is a time for serious introspection and prayer; and we must listen to our informed conscience which acts as God’s voice in our hearts. We must also consider all the consequences of our actions, the positive as well as the negative effects of our decisions, in the short term and the long term, and what these decisions say about us.

Filipinos for Life believes that the recent events regarding Duterte raise serious doubts about his readiness for the highest office in the land. This nation deserves a morally upright and competent leader, one who will revere his position as a sacred duty to serve God and the people of the Philippines.

  1. Mayor Duterte is not a perfect person. What I am looking for is what he can do for the country to lift it up from the sad state of what it is now. Its his habit of cursing to emphasize his frustration on matters he wants to address. He had said in so many times and occasions that his actions in governance is to protect the fundamental rights of the majority of Filipinos here. I don’t think his cursing of Pope Francis have in anyway related or affected his resolve in protecting the interest of common people in our society. Protection for women, child abuse, control of crimes, drugs and of the development of Davao ( and now for the Philippines) has been his centerpiece of programs as a President. We should not look at a small dot in a white sheet of paper and forget what he aims to do for the Philippines if ever he became the President. Just because he cursed the Pope does not make him a person not deserving to lead this country. My Gosh! Which president of this country morally upright anyway? Cory Aquino? How much do we know about what is going on when these leaders are not in front of the public? If you want someone “who will revere his position as a sacred duty to serve God and the people of the Philippines”, then why don’t you urge the cardinals to run for president? So, cursing the Pope or anyone for that matter is NOT good.. but that is NOT the basis for choosing the leader of this country! Look at what Duterte has done so far in Davao… and OPEN your effin eyes!!! Geez!

    • neverduterte says:

why bring Cory Aquino’s name here? You are so grossly out of tune

    • Herminia says:

You wake up and got your moral up.. Stop maligning other people.. go with the issue… prove yourself he is qualified and that’s it . Also, please be advise that being Head of the State does’t only concern on the Internal Affairs of the country.. if you know what that means.

  5. Ernesto Gementera says:

You might say everything about Duterte as a superman who can deliver you of all of the country’s problems including yours. But are you ready to sacrifice everything when Duterte starts to like you daughter as his next girl friend; or he mistakenly killed your son as a drug offender. YOUR CHOICE REALLY.

    • lulu says:

Its true the CHOICE TO VOTE IS UPON OURSELVES.. We are accountable on what ever we decide.. People Who really dont like duterte keeps on bashing him regarding on what comes out from his mouth ( bastos walang modo disrespectful bulgar etc. Mga negative towards him) but you guys never see the good deeds he do in serving his people.. You were blinded but what you believe about him.. Try to Look at the other candidates most of them have sugar-coated words in convincing people but have you check what they have done in service?? You cannot just judge a person by what you only hear.. I am defending him not because I my self came from davao but because I want also the whole Filipino can have the privilege we get from how he serves the well the davaoeno people.. Try to step a foot in his city for a week then you can judge or say what ever you want about him… If you want a change then take the risk.. Him as a public servant do his duties and responsibilities with pure intentions..If people only sees his flaws then vote binay or roxas.. And never complain that the country never change at all.

  6. Noel P. says:

The pope is just a man, he is not God. When you think about it and really read your Bible, you will know why. He, the pope is just like you and me, he is only a man. He cannot forgive sin, that would be blasphemy, and isn’t that why Jesus got nailed to the cross, is because the pharisees did not believe that He was God in the flesh. So if the pope can resurrect himself from the dead, then and only then would I bow down to him.

  7. Eunice P. Pablo says:

Whewwwww…..The BIBLE says in Romans 3:23 “For ALL have sinned and come short of the Glory of GOD!” NO one is exempted NOT even the Pope(as he is still a human being NOT GOD) nor you and I. Our human trend of having a crab mentality and pointing fingers at others INSTEAD of PRAYING, ANALYZING and THINKING who would be the best bet to lead for the betterment of our country!

  8. The first time I heard Duterte on a local TV, I was shocked by the rudeness of his character. Although I heard good news about Davao before transferring here, Duterte’s use of foul language came as a surprise.

To give enlightenment to all who still do not know DU30, let me quote a post from a fellow Davaoeno – Francis John H. Carmona:

“Do I like Duterte’s character? A big NO. Walang sinuman ang gusto ng nagmumura, babaero at pumapatay ng tao. Hindi iyan ang itinuro na magandang asal ng ating mga magulang at kahit ng simbahan. Hindi rin ito magandang ehemplo para sa kabataan. Kaya obligasyon ng mga magulang na bantayan ang mga bata na makarinig ng kanyang mga sinasabi.

Do I like Duterte as a leader? Absolutely YES! Duterte like all of us has imperfections but on the other side, his service to the people of Davao is phenomenal.

Bawal i-discriminate ang Muslim, Kristiyano, Lumad, bakla, lesbian, transsexual, may kapansanan, ordinaryong mamamayan at kahit sino man.
    11. Asal kanto, ugaling kalye pero WORLD CLASS ang serbisyo. And take note, lahat ng tao nakikinabang sa kanyang serbisyo, hindi lang ang mayayaman.
    – Davao Central 911 (The only 911 in Asia. Equipments are all US-made. All services are free.)
    – California Traffic Light System (Most modern in the Philippines. Sensorized, centralized to Traffic Center and Central 911)
    – High-tech CCTVs, again the most modern in the Philippines.
    – Public Safety Command Center powered by IBM (US technology giant company) making Davao the only Smart City in the Philippines. The fastest that can respond to crime and disaster.
    – Food stamps for the homeless.
    – State of the art facilities of a GOVERNMENT hospital. Yes, the most modern hospital equipments in Davao are not in private hospitals but in a government hospital – the Southern Philippines Medical Center (formerly Davao Medical Center).
    12. Every December, Lumads from across Davao region and neighboring provinces go to Davao to ask for money and christmas presents like old clothes, food items and others. As far as I know, Duterte does not encourage this practice but he accommodates them and assigned them to different barangays. They will stay here in the city for weeks at sagot ng city government and food at lodging. At the end of December, dump trucks from the city offer a free ride to their homes at may baon pang sacks of rice divided to families at karga lahat ng bagay na bigay sa kanila during the month-long caroling.

He is actually making a sacrifice to us. Let him be the sinner, let him do the dirty work. Because he said, he must do the things that he must do as ugly as it can be because nobody in the government will do it for the people. In the end, only God can judge him on the things that he’s done.”

“I don’t care if I go to hell as long as the people I serve will live in paradise.” – Rodrigo Duterte..

    • if he could violate the law by killing criminals.. do you think he will not kill kasi meron lang siyang nakagalit sa kanto? do you think he will not kill kasi meron lang humarang sa kanya sa daan? hahaha.. sir. tell you kid your about what you have written in your post.. parang ganito lang iyon eh..its okay to kill just dont steal..

      • Let me clarify your argument: “If he could kill criminals then, he is an exterminator; a murderer (na kahit yong kagalit sa kanto dahil humarang sa daan ay pinapatay).” Are you telling me that all those who kill criminals are also psychopath killers (victimizing innocent civilians) and do not obey the law?

As a matter of policy, Duterte has given specific instruction to all Davao policemen to shoot any criminal who is dangerous (carrying a gun) and will attempt to fight when arrested. Is it illegal? I don’t think so. Is it immoral? Not necessarily. If you ask Duterte, he is more concern about the WELL BEING of his policemen (who risk their lives in the line of duty) than the life of a criminal. That is why, hindi lahat ng mga criminals dito sa Davao ay namamatay, dahil meron din namang nakukulong (yong sumuko ng maayos). Pero ibang usapan na if repeat offenders (habitual rapists, snatchers, robbers, drug addicts and pushers, etc…). He will warned them to leave Davao.

Is mayor Duterte a psychopath killer (pumapatay kahit kagalit sa kalsada o inosenting sibilyan)? I refrain to answer the question because I may sound self-serving. I strongly advise that you visit Davao for a week. When you’re here, you can interview the people and discover the answer for yourself. Just a few hints: a) Davao has 1.4Million tri-people population of Christians, Muslims and Lumads (a challenging mix). All city ordinances of Davao (No Smoking in Public, Total Firecracker Ban: christmas season, Speed Limit: 30km within the city, Liquor Ban: 2a.m., etc) are diligently followed by the people (regardless of identity). Why? because the mayor has political will. Is that a leadership of a psychopath killer? Do you think Davaoenos are crazy enough to follow a psychopath leader? This is more important, can you identify a government official in your place who has the same performance/accomplishment as mayor Duterte?

You said that Duterte is a law violator (at mamamatay-tao) because he kills criminals. Now, what will be your advice to the father and mother of a young girl who was shot (in close range) by a riding in tandem. The girl just ran to hug her father because he was mugged by a gun carrying criminal. How will you appease their anger? Perhaps, you tell them to study Taekwondo so they can be better prepared next time(kung merong next time!). Here is the link to actual video:

Alam ko maraming nangyayaring ganito sa Metro Manila at karatig na mga syudad. Sino ba ang iyong kakampi? Ni pulis ay walang magawa dahil corrupt kagaya ng mga local officials!

    • neverduterte says:

give us proof of all these things you claim he has done, that will be the time we give our support to du30 even if he is below

      • Justsaying says:

No matter how strong the proofs are, you will still not believe them anyway. It is entirely non-sense to convince someone like you who have already decided against the person and to believe what you have already believed. Yet still, may God bless this country of ours.
